Hammer attack
A MAN was hospitalised with head and hand injuries this week after an alleged attack involving a man with a hammer.
An ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were called to the scene of the incident, which happened on a nature reserve close to King Edward VI School, in Bury St Edmunds, at around 3pm on Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service said the victim, a man in his 40s, was found conscious and breathing.
He was treated at the scene but was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, to receive further treatment for injuries he had received to his head and one of his hands.
He was released on Wednesday.
A bus turning circle outside King Edward VI School’s Spring Lane entrance was cordoned off on Tuesday as police officers, assisted by a police helicopter, hunted for a named suspect.
Geoff Barton, headteacher of King Edward VI School, said despite not being informed of the incident, he felt police had acted responsibly for the safety of his pupils because the cordon would have prevented them from walking into the area concerned.
No other local schools were informed of the incident.
Today 19-year-old Sam Delo, of Ipswich Street, Bury, was charged with robbery and was due to appear at West Suffolk Magistrates’ Court.
A police spokesman confirmed that the robbery and the alleged hammer attack were linked.
