Fly tipper tells of sorrow for actions

A MILDENHALL man has been fined £50 after he dumped a small van load of waste on the side of a road.

Vasile Baiculescu, 47, of Newnham Close, Mildenhall, pleaded guilty to depositing waste at Thetford Road, Mildenhall, at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on July 26.

Speaking on behalf of the claimant, Forest Heath District Council, Paul Weller told the court that on March 13 the council had received a complaint regarding fly tipping.

Mr Weller told the court that a small van load of waste including a large wooden cupboard, two large basketball bases and a large blue and white tartan bag had been left on the side of the road.

He said: “Fly tipping is a serious matter. Looking at the photographs there’s not a lot there but even that small amount costs the authority a significant sum of removal.”

Speaking through a translator, Baiculescu told the court that the items had come from his van which he had decided to sell after falling behind with electricity payments.

He said: “I would truly like to express my sorrow to the people of Mildenhall that I did not know how to dispose of the items.”

Presiding magistrate Sarah Hardingham said: “Fly tipping is a serious offence because it’s very unsociable, due to the fact you only earn £25 a week we will fine you £50 and a £15 victim surcharge and £150 in costs. In the future you must use the proper means of disposal.”
