Burglar admits to 34 offences after he is caught by DNA
Nicholas Gallagher who was jailed for three years for multiple burglaries
A prolific burglar with an ‘appalling record’ has been jailed for three years.
Nicholas Gallagher, 41, of Bill Rickaby Drive, Newmarket told police he had had broken into homes in Well Street, St John’s Street and Fenn Way in Bury St Edmunds in 2004. He also admitted two burglaries in Clare and asked for 34 other offences to be taken into account.
Gallagher was arrested after police matched his DNA to blood found at a burglary in Stoke by Clare last November.
Ipswich Crown Court was told on Friday that Gallagher has pleaded guilty to five offences of burglary at homes in Stoke by Clare, Clare and an optician’s in Halstead, Essex.
Samantha Leigh, in mitigation, said Gallagher had initially stolen to pay for drugs and alcohol but more recently crimes were committed to fund a chronic gambling habbit. He had cooperated with police and without his help it was likely that many of the offences he admitted to would have stayed unsolved.
Mr Recorder Craig Ferguson said: “You were active as a prolific burglar, invading the homes of members of the public who live in Suffolk and Essex.”
He told Galagher he had an ‘appaling’ record of offences of dishonesty.
