AN INTREPID fund-raiser is looking to raise more than £10,000 as he starts and finishes a series of charity events at the top of the world.

Starting tomorrow, Craig Jarvis, director of Ravenwood Children’s Trust, will lead a team of motorcyclists on a 10-day trek through the Himalayas.

It is the first of a year of challenges for Mr Jarvis, which will culminate with him running The Everest Marathon in May 2013 – the highest race of its kind in the world, starting at 17,000ft.

In between, he will take part in a host of events.

On July 5, he will carry the Olympic Torch as it passes through Southwold.

Then, on July 8, he will be part of a Ravenwood Children’s Trust team taking part in the London 10k in support of Facing Africa.

In the first challenge, which will see riders using Royal Enfield motorcycles at altitudes of more than 16,000ft, he has volunteered to lead around 35 fund-raisers through a testing environment.

Altitude, unpredictable weather and the constant risk of landslides add to the endurance challenge.

Mr Jarvis said: “We are taking a team of fund-raisers up there and making sure that they stay safe and well.

“The biggest challenge is altitude and altitude sickness – when you are that high up it can really affect you.

“Temperature is also a test as it can drop to minus three, even in the summer.”

The team will meet up in India, with Mr Jarvis flying into Delhi.

Ravenwood Children’s Trust raises money for charities both at home and overseas and Mr Jarvis said the causes made the challenges worthwhile.

“It supports worthy causes both in the UK and internationally with a special emphasis on children.

“It would be nice to raise around £10,000 from all the projects because the money is well used,” he said.

The charity will also be holding a number of other fund-raising events throughout the year.

On October 24 a Ladies Indulgent Evening will be held, with a fashion show by Ice from Ixworth as part of the evening.

The charity’s annual black tie ball is also pencilled in for November 25. Tables of 10 are £400 or individuals can attend for £42.95, with a four course meal and dancing included.

Raffle tickets are also on sale at the hotel.
