St Edmundsbury Borough Council has been urged to direct at least 30 per cent of a government grant towards affordable housing.

Green councillor Julia Wakelam proposed a motion to last night’s full council meeting that it should direct the money from the New Homes Bonus paid by government on each new house. She said the council expected to receive £872,000 in 2014-15.

She said: “We have an acute shortage of affordable housing i the borough. On average, rent accounts for nearly 50 per cent of net weekly income in St edmundsbury. It is no surprise that the number of those in work claiming Housing Benefit has risen 76 per cent since 2009.”

The motion was referred to the council’s cabinet.
