Volunteers who played a key role in helping almost 9,000 people view an original copy of the Magna Carta in Bury St Edmunds were thanked at a special service.

They were invited to the service at St Edmundsbury Catheral on Sunday - the day after the closure of the exhibition showcasing the 1215 copy of the historic document which was loaned by Lincoln Cathedral.

About 8,000 tickets were fully booked 10 days before the month-long exhibition ended and another 1,000 school pupils were also given special access.

Alan Baxter, project manager for the Magna Carta 800 Committee, said: “The 120 volunteers who assisted the visitors and the cathedral staff who worked with them all did a fantastic job.”
