MENTA: Workshops aim to get young people working
The news is full of reports that in the UK we risk a ‘Lost Generation’, with one in seven young people not in education, not employed, nor in some form of career training (Neets). With these harsh statistics, Menta, the Suffolk Enterprise Agency, is aiming to address the problem across the county.
The not for profit organisation has launched GoMenta, a division specifically targeted to help young people aged 15-30 looking at alternatives to traditional employment.
GoMenta arranges a number of different courses, such as the free, half-day Saturday workshop on The Business of Music. It will take place on Saturday, March 2, in Bury St Edmunds, and will help people to find out about marketing, distribution, touring in the music industry and how to make money from their musical talent.
There is also a second free GoMenta workshop for budding musicians a week later on March 9, in Saxmundham, on The 21st Century Freelance Musician.
Alex Till, pictured, chief cxecutive of Menta, said: “We want to help young people take the right steps for themselves and running a small business based on their interests can be a good place to start. These GoMenta targeted workshops are proving popular for young people considering being their own boss as a viable and credible alternative to claiming benefits.
“Menta already provides free, business advice sessions and subsidised business workshops for start up, emerging and existing businesses in Suffolk but we are aware these might not always fit with young peoples’ needs.”
He added that future courses would cover other interests such as design, textiles, video and photography.
For further GoMenta course details and to book go to www.gomenta.org.uk or, to arrange a free one to one meeting with a business adviser in Bury or Haverhill call 01284 760206.
