A CRICKET club has already secured its most important victory of the summer after securing more than £50,000 in Lottery funding.

Thetford Town Cricket Club will host teams in a brand new clubhouse after they were awarded £56,208 by Sport England.

The grant, from the Inspired Facilities Fund, will provide an area for members and guests to meet and socialise.

Vic Peters, the club’s chairman, said: “We are delighted to secure the first Inspired Facilities grant, which will enable us to upgrade the quality of our premises.

“The committee and club have laboured hard to achieve this funding and we are determined to increase participation in sport and we feel that this will be our legacy to the 2012 Olympics.”

A cheque handover was made at the club’s Mundford Road pitch last Friday, with Elizabeth Truss MP in attendance.

She said: “In the year of the London 2012 Olympics it is really wonderful to see a local sport’s club benefiting from these awards.”

The cricket club is one of 350 community groups nationwide who have been offered part of a £17.4 million fund from Sport England.
