A PROJECT stretching back more than a decade has finally been completed – with new community facilities opening at St Mary’s Church, in Bacton, last Friday.

Ten years ago, villagers decided to build a flexible community space for the whole village to use.

After two years to raise the £180,000 needed, building work began – and now the church has a community room, organ loft and toilets.

The village now hopes to develop the facilities and use the church as a meeting place for the unemployed to get help, to provide leisure and information facilities, and as a home for clubs for elderly and isolated people, as well as an internet café.

Helen Thompson, one of the members responsible for the improvements, said: “The idea was to encourage the use of the largest building in the community by all community groups.”
