MORE than 1,400 school children from West Suffolk took part in this year’s annual schools carol concerts, with 1,000 packing out St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
Children from primary and middle schools sang carols under the leadership of James Thomas, the cathedral’s musical director, and these ranged from modern anthems to more tradition carols.
It was also another chance for the cathedral’s newly restored organ to be showcased after a £750,000 project to replace old and worn parts and to build a new case in oak which was gilded.
Sarah Freiswell, cathedral communications manager, said: “I think every chair we own was used for the morning concert as we were packed out. For some of the children it was their first experience of singing in such a vast space.”
