WHEN winning a cookery book inspired Scout leader Martyn Bryant to run a cookery competition for his troop, he knew a former Scout who would be prepared to help.
His son Sam is a head chef at Strattons Hotel, in Swaffham, and agreed to demonstrate some of the book’s recipes to the 1st Mendelsham Scouts.
The following week, the Scouts tried their hand at the dishes, though not quite with Sam’s success.
Martyn said: “When I was a Scout I took my Master Cook’s badge in a restaurant in Bristol and that gave me the itch. I trained as a chef, moving on to other catering roles. My son has followed in my footsteps. This is an excellent example of what Scouts can do.”
He won the copy of London chef Bruce Poole’s latest book by entering a competition in Scouting magazine about events the Mendelsham troop had held to recruit adult volunteers.
