A vandal who admitted causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to a community centre in Fornham All Saints has been ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation.
The reckless act, which took place on August 16, 2013, was branded ‘sheer stupidity’ by community centre chairman Enid Gathercole after dangerous manholes were left exposed.
A door was also damaged and blue and grey paint was thrown over the walls, windows and floor of an area used as football changing rooms.
A 17-year-old from Bury St Edmunds, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to causing £3,055 worth of damage and was sentenced at Bury Magistrates’ Court last month.
He was referred to the Suffolk Youth Offending Service for 12 months and ordered to pay £1,000 compensation, costs of £150 and a £15 victim surcharge.
In response to the court’s decision, Mrs Gathercole said: “I’m just glad somebody was charged with the vandalism because it was in a heck of a mess, it really was.”
She added: “Let’s hope the word’s spread that we’re not going to stand for this sort of thing and we will get the police involved.
“It was wanton vandalism. There was no point in it at all.”
