GUESTS from around the world were on hand to dedicate a community centre to a World War Two hero.
Representatives from four nations were at RAF Feltwell on Saturday for the renaming of the base’s community activity centre for Sgt James A. Ward.
Sgt Ward was the first New Zealander to be awarded the Victoria Cross after heroic actions over the Netherlands on July 7, 1941.
Sgt Ward walked across the wing of his Wellington bomber to extinguish a fire that had started in the right engine.
The crew then returned safely to RAF Feltwell.
Col Cassie Barlow, USAF Support Group Commander, said the centre was a ‘historic site’. A replica of Sgt Ward’s Victoria Cross has been placed in the centre.
