A decision to allow a private company to take over council run care homes in a £60 million overhaul has been suspended following objections from councillors.

This week, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet unanimously approved Care UK’s plan to take over and replace 16 homes with 10 new facilities.

However, opposition members have called the decision in to be discussed by the authority’s scrutiny committee due to a number of concerns.

The motion, which has been proposed by Labour Group leader Cllr Sandy Martin and seconded by Green Group leader Mark Ereira- Guyer, says they were unhappy over issues surrounding the costs of the proposals and had concerns with regards to a fail safe plan should there be a failure of the provider.

The scrutiny committee will meet to discuss the matter in the next two weeks.
