Two young people who found themselves in difficult circumstances married young and have been together for 50 ‘happy’ years.
Keith and Carol Steed, of Park Road, Bury celebrate their Golden Wedding tomorrow. They met when he was 16 and Carol just 13. She said she would go out with him when she was 14 and they have been together ever since,
Keith left home and was in lodgings and Carol was brought up by her grandparents and found herself homeless when they had to move from their tied home to a smaller property. They began married life in an old caravan at Chedburgh.
Carol said: “It was so freezing cold that winter. We were freezing in that caravan.”
The couple worked hard and saved and later moved to a bungalow in Great Whelnetham.
Carol, now 67, worked for nearly 30 years as a housekeeper at West Suffolk Hospital while Keith, 71, set up his own business as an electrician.
Keith said: “Carol was so very, very pretty. We enjoy being together and while we’ve had our ups and downs like everyone we enjoy our time together and wouldn’t want to swap each other for the world.”
They have two daughters, Julie and Jackie, and four grandchildren and will celebrate their anniversary with a trip to London which includes a trip up The Shard and a visit to Buckingham Palace.
