A council chairman has called for safety improvements to Eriswell Road after witnessing a collision on the route.

Cllr Gary Peachey, chairman of Beck Row Parish Council, said: “I would like to see a speed reduction and more safety put in place.”

He has proposed that lowering the 60mph limit to 50mph between Holywell Row and Eriswell would increase people’s safety consciousness.

He said: “I know of scores of accidents along there.

“It’s windy – the road is all crevices and dips and bends. It’s not the best of roads and it gets a lot of traffic.”

Travelling along the road on September 14, Cllr Peachey witnessed a collision and made the decision to renew calls for increased safety.

He said several attempts to have the speed limit lowered had previously been made by Beck Row Parish Council.

As well as a speed reduction, Cllr Peachey said vegetation needed to be cleared away from signs and safety measures taken.

While working as a firefighter he said he had been called to collisions on the route many times. Police had also been called to four collisions on the stretch of road since March.

Suffolk county councillor Colin Noble said he shared Cllr Peachey’s concerns.

He said: “I will be asking officers to look at it again, to assess the condition of the road and whether or not we can introduce a lower speed limit.”

The chairman of Eriswell Parish Council, Pearl Brunning, said the council was minded to support Mr Peachy’s call for increased safety and would formally discuss the matter at their next meeting.
