The attempted theft of cable between Pakenham and Thurston has cut off phones and broadband to 125 premises in the area.

Chris Williams of Thurston said he lost the service at about 10pm last night.

“The call centre in India said then it would take 50 hours to put us back on, now we’ve been told it will be December 4 because they don’t work Saturday and Sunday, which is ridiculous,” he said.

But a BT spokesman said teams would be working on the repair over the weekend because so many people have been cut off.
