Romance in village high street

LAVENHAM High Street has been shortlisted for the title of ‘most romantic street’ in Britain in an internet poll.

The picturesque street with its half-timbered Medieval buildings has won over a panel of experts from the world of travel, lifestyle and popular culture who have decided that Lavenham is one of 21 streets worthy of the award.

Now it’s up to people to vote for Lavenham online in the annual Google Street View awards to be announced in June.

People can also choose the best shopping and hippest street in the vote, which celebrates the country’s best streets.

John Morrell, a manager at Lavenham’s Swan Hotel, said: “We have a lot of people visit us as a romantic location and, as a wedding venue, lots of people come back to celebrate their wedding anniversaries.

“Lavenham is a truly lovely village with beautiful buildings and lovely shops, and places to visit. I definitely think it qualifies as the most romantic street, and I think people should vote for it.”

Voting for the competition closes on Sunday May 22 – go to http://maps.google.co.uk/beststreets to vote.
