A LONG-SERVING employee of Amot Controls in Bury St Edmunds said farewell to colleagues when he retired after 43 years with the company.

Phil Finch joined Precision Engineering Products, in Cullum Road, Bury, 50 years ago as a 15-year-old apprentice and then moved to Amot Controls in Western Way as a machinist and stayed there until he retired, having worked in a variety of departments.

Michael Park, Amot’s operations director, told a gathering of Phil’s colleagues: “Man even went to the moon after Phil joined Amot.”

Phil said he had stayed because Amot had been a family owned company that looked after people.

He added: “I haven’t wanted to move because I’ve moved around the factory.”

He is looking forward to spending more time on his love of steam trains and visiting National Trust properties. To mark his 65th birthday he took a luxury trip on Friday from Norwich to York on a train pulled by a steam engine.

He said: “After 43 years it’s not the work I’ll miss it’s the people.”
