AN Uncle Sam-style stilt walker will be handing out goody bags to promote small businesses in Bury St Edmunds as part of a nationwide celebration, Independents Day, on July 4.
The initiative, which encourages shoppers to buy at least one item from local small business, is organised by Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Acedemy for Retail. It is supported by the town centre improvement organisation Bid4Bury. More than 60 per cent of shops in the town centre are independents and some of them have been working in difficult circumstances following the Cupola House fire. Among them is Kate Palliser, proprietor of Scarlet, who said; “Independents Day gives a chance to fly the flag for the smaller business and lets everyone know that it’s business as usual despite recent events.
“We have a range of shops you just don’t find elsewhere.”
