West Suffolk councils are working to identify smaller retail businesses in the area eligible for business rate relief.

St Edmundsbury Borough and Forest Heath District Councils are to roll out a £1,000 reduction for retail businesses with a rateable value under £50,000.

Cllrs Alaric Pugh and David Bowman, who represent St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath respectively, said the authorities were ‘working hard’ to identify those eligible to include the discount in March bills.

The reduction is not available to businesses such as betting shops, solicitors, vets or estate agents,

Anyone who believes they are eligible but finds their reduction has not been automatically made should contact the councils.

Business rates are controlled by the Government with councils sending the bills.
