It’s a real family affair at a Bury St Edmunds car firm after an 18-year-old apprentice followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncle.
Greg Dawson joined Cecil and Larter, in Mildenhall Road, last August as a Volvo apprentice - joining his relatives Dennis and Darren Leader.
Dennis, 67, who is a car servicing and marketing professional, will be celebrating 30 years at the company at the end of the year.
Five years after he started his career there, his son Darren, 41, became an apprentice and worked his way up to become Volvo master technician.
Mr Dawson said: “My family have been very supportive. Having them around makes you feel at home.”
Darren said: “I support my nephew as much as I can but the truth is I don’t really need to do that as he is doing just fine on his own.”
Dennis, whose godson Mark Williams is also an employee, added: “I actually retired two years ago but the owner (Ray Cawston) convinced me to stay with the company on a part-time basis. I couldn’t say no as I love it here so much.”
Mr Cawston said: “In years gone by it was probably quite common to have three generations of the same family working for the same company. Today it’s rare.” He added that he hopes Mr Dawson stays with the company for a long time - emulating the careers of his uncle and grandfather.
