The importance of the financial services sectorto the Bury St Edmunds area has been highlighted by the town’s MP this week.

Figures uncovered by David Ruffley revealed that there are 2,200 people employed in the sector in Bury and that they generate £215 million gross added value to the constituency.

Mr Ruffley, a ‘fierce critic of greedy bankers’, said“In the centre of Bury there is a huge amount of financial related businesses from accountants to chartered surveyors tomortgage brokers, independent financial advisers, lawyers, as well as some decent local branches of the big high street banks.

“We have to differiate between the irresponsible greedy bankers and the rest of the UK financial services which raise a lot of brass for this country.

“It is a huge chunk of the Suffolk economy.”
