Polish workers are at a premium
Polish workers are being sought in Suffolk to plug gaps in the workforce, say local agencies.
With low unemployment, employers in the East of England are struggling to recruit staff.
Rob Austen, industrial director of Select Recruitment, in Ipswich, said this trend could threaten industry.
"Most people are expecting these trends to continue so, increasingly, we will have to look to new EU countries, such as Poland, for people to fill vacancies in Suffolk.
"It sounds crazy but if we didn't do this, local companies would probably have to turn business away or even worse, move even more jobs abroad," he said.
But another agency, Euro Resource, in Woolpit, has just been launched specifically to help provide bosses with Polish workers.
"East Anglia has a particular need for committed hard working staff to fill the many gaps in our workplaces that our local employers find hard to fill," said Peter Foremski, Euro Resource bi-lingual director.
"Polish workers are well-known for their reliability, strong work and high motivation.
"UK companies have to compete on a national and global scale in today's world.
"If you don't know how to access the best people at the right costs here or abroad, your competition will have the advantage."
Euro Resource is looking to take advantage of the opportunities offered from the expansion of the European Union.
Poland is one of the most recent countries to join the EU, meaning the Polish are now free to work in the UK without restrictions and work permits.
The Woolpit firm aims to reduce recruitment costs by using the internet to bring together UK companies and pre-qualified English speaking workers.
Employers job adverts are placed on the company website, allowing Polish employees to view jobs online and apply via Euro Resource.
The agency, which has an office in Poland, says it has already begun successfully placing workers in Suffolk.
It is envisaged that Polish workers could help address shortages in factories, offices, hospitals, shops, agriculture and IT industries.
