A NEW café and cake shop has opened in Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, with the launch of Patisserie Valerie in the former Barwells shop.
The chain, which has outlets throughout the UK, had been wanting to come to Bury St Edmunds for some time but had wanted to wait for the right site.
On Saturday, the doors opened and queues formed as busines was brisk.
Dan Booker, operations manager, said: “We had always expected it to be busy and it was great to see people coming and looking in through the window. I’d like to thank them for being so patient as people were queueing out the door.”
Mr Booker said that Bury was very much a destination point so that as well as residents many customers were visitors to the town.
And for locals, who were saddened to see the closure of Barwells at the end of last year, there was good news as Patisserie Valerie is continuing to sell Barwells’ iconic suasage rolls, which are being baked on the premises.
The original Patisserie Valerie opened in 1926 in Soho when a Belgian-born Madam Valerie decided to introduce a taste of the continent to London.
