Hall looks to future with seminar plan
A historic hall, containing 25 generations of one family's history, has become part of a new business venture to help to secure its future.
Boxted Hall, near Hartest, has been in the Poley family since it was built by Sir John Poley, in 1392, and has seen the family's fortunes rise and fall.
But now Toby Weller-Poley, who took over the house and its 1,200 acres when his mother died about six months ago, hopes to secure its future by using it as a conference and seminar centre.
"I had to remain here and do something with it or get a job and get a caretaker to look after it," he said.
"It is a question of making sure the place will be secure in the future. Who knows where farming is going to go?"
Because there is so little money in farming, Mr Weller-Poley said he decided to diversify and offer a unique business venue for conferences and seminars.
"I think it is unique. We offer something most other places cannot," he said.
"I believe we are one of only three families in the country who have lived in the same house for more than 500 years.
"As much as anything, we are looking for people to give us an idea of what they want. We are very flexible and adaptable to people's needs."
The house was built in 1392 by Sir John Poley on the site of an older house, whose 11th century bridge still serves as a crossing over the moat to the entrance.
In 1820, two wings were added and a red brick faade covered the old plastered front of the building. The main hall remains unchanged from its original wooden panelled state.
"Other rooms have been modified but it is pretty much as it was," said Mr Weller-Poley.
The house has a tennis court, heated swimming pool, 16 rooms – 15 available for use – and extensive grounds.
