Garden shed body art studio plan
A tattoo artist hopes to turn his garden shed in Bury St Edmunds into a body art studio to launch his own business.
Wayne Bailey, 43, has applied to transform the brick garden shed at his home in Acacia Avenue, into a tattoo parlour where he can etch designs for a growing number of customers.
He said: "I have always wanted to be a tattoo artist since I was at school.
"So many people are coming to me now because they trust me, so I want to have my own space to do it properly."
Mr Bailey has worked as a body artist for the past three years, creating designs for friends and family who he currently tattoos in his kitchen.
But as word of his work has spread, Mr Bailey has found it difficult to keep up with demand and has decided to launch his own company, called Show Us Your Tats, as a part-time business.
He will open from 5-9pm from Mondays to Thursdays and 10am-3pm every other Saturday on a strictly appointment-only basis.
He said: "I have got to work from home as I can't afford to hire a commercial unit.
"It is going to be completely clean and everything is going to be stainless steel, so it can be sterilised."
Mr Bailey has applied to change the use of his shed in a planning application to St Edmundsbury Borough Council, outlining plans to upgrade the shed with a UPVC window and door, as well as installing a toilet in the unit.
But Bury St Edmunds Town Council has objected to the scheme, stating the studio would be inappropriate in a residential area as it may cause noise disturbance.
Mr Bailey's wife, Michelle, 34, said: "When you think about tattoos you might think about hairy bikers.
"But people who have tattoos are just normal, there aren't going to be queues of people hanging around the house."
Plans for the conversion will now go before St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Development Control Committee on July 2.
