Farm's ice cream scoops awards

The fruit ice creams made on a Suffolk farm have scooped a generous helping of awards from the Guild of Fine Foods.

Alder Tree, based at Alder Carr Farm, in Needham Market, has proved that it has great taste, after it was awarded a total of 10 gold stars in the Great Taste Awards 2010.

The guild classes its top three star award as 'wow, you must taste this' and gave the coveted award to the farm's damson fruit ice cream.

Its tayberry and summer fruits ice creams each won two-star status, which, the guild says, means they are 'faultless'.

And its blackcurrant, Christmas, and gooseberry and elderflower ice creams won one star each, which means they are classed as 'perfection' by the guild.

The awards are a recognised mark for fine food, provenance and taste.

Stephany Hardingham, managing director of Alder Tree, is delighted with the accolades.

"Out of 6,017 entries only 97 were awarded the top three stars and we have done it again. It confirms what our customers have known for years, that we have great products - rich, fruity and delicious," she said.

The Great Taste Award are the speciality food producers' equivalent to fine dining's Michelin stars.

Each year, before gold is awarded, a minimum of eight independent food industry experts, buyers, chefs and food writers must taste and discuss the various foods.

In order for two or three gold stars to be awarded, up to 20 judges must unanimously agree that an entry has achieved perfection.

Winning means that producers like Alder Tree can use the Great Taste Awards logo as well as benefiting from a month-long consumer promotion in hundreds of food halls, delis and farm shops.

Alder Tree makes a range of traditional English fruit flavour ice creams using their own and local fruit to achieve a 38 per cent fruit content.

It has also been short-listed for a Suffolk Producer of the Year award.

"We are delighted," said Stephany, whose parents grow the fruit. "Who was to know that a business that started in 1987 with a glut of raspberries and granny's recipe could come so far?"
