Council gets passionate about Muntons
A COMPANY responsible for making the delicious centre of maltesers has had its success recognised by a district council.
Muntons, a Stowmarket-based manufacturer and supplier of malt, was celebrated on Monday for beating companies including Boots and British Aerospace in winning Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year 2011.
“We need people to generate wealth and prosperity in the private sector if we are to thrive,” said Cllr Tim Passmore, leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, which hosted the event at the John Peel Centre.
“Muntons is passionate about malt and we’re passionate, as a council, about Muntons,” he added.
Alan Ridealgh, managing director, said Muntons was being recognised for things it had been doing for years but had only just started talking to others about.

“We’re delighted to be honoured in this way and were all quite overwhelmed by the idea,” he said.
The firm, which supplies the raw ingredient for Kellogg’s cereals and whose malt is used by local drinks suppliers including St Peters and Calvors, also came runner up in the overall Manufacturer of the Year competition, 13th in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies awards and won Bakery Innovation of the Year in the Food Ingredients Europe and Natural Ingredients competition.
