Thetford councillors have called for changes to the plans to redevelop the site of the former Anchor pub in Bridge Street.

At a planning meeting on Wednesday, councillors agreed to support the development in principle but with a number of reservations.

They are concerned at potential loss of parking spaces and some of the detailed appearance of the scheme which will see a hotel, cinema and retail development plus hot food and a restauarnt built on the site.

Councillors have told Breckland District Council which has submitted plans for the site that they are concerned that there will be a loss of valuable car parking for the town.

They have asked the district council to replace the tin shiny roof with a matt
finish and say they do not like the projected parapet roof in Bridge Street.

Councillors say that the
facade sightline in Bridge Street needs more detailed architectural attention to reduce its impact on the street scene.

They also request that Breckland planning committee agrees the schedule of materials for the project and not an officer.

Councillors also want the path by the Dad’s Army statue to be maintained and say they do not want a wall placed in front of the statue.

They also have concerns over the reduction of parking spaces and the impact this will have on the town centre.
