Bosch move brings jobs

THE expansion of a technology giant in Stowmarket will bring up to 100 jobs to the town.

Bosch Lawn and Garden, which currently has its worldwide base for garden and lawn products in the town, is moving into the old Hopgoods furniture store in Gipping Way.

Refurbishment for the move was granted planning permission in July last year by Mid Suffolk District Council and work is due to begin at the end of February.

The company is expecting to employ an extra 100 technically skilled engineers at the new state-of- the-art research and development centre.

Gary King, Bosch’s UK marketing manager, said the expansion was an exciting development.

He said: “All the cordless and wired lawnmowers Bosch makes are made in Stowmarket and exported to Australia and all the countries in between.

“So from that basis it was sensible to set up the research centre near the headquarters and where we had facilities already.

“It is really exciting that there is a big and well known brand in the town that is selling to the world market.”

Stowmarket’s deputy mayor and county councillor Anne Whybrow said it was great news for the local economy.

She said: “It is fabulous news.

“The furniture site had been there for donkeys years and Hopgoods is a name synonomous with Stowmarket.

“That they are using what was an unoccupied building and creating these jobs is excellent.

“Think of the skills that will come to the area. Let’s just hope they settle and shop in the town.

“We are attracting businesses to the town because of our good road and rail links.”

Stowmarket town councillor Gerard Brewster said: “I think it is excellent news.

“We are seeing almost a new life in town at the moment.”
