Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre is receiving a big investment to meet the town’s growing fitness demand, as well as teaming up with West Suffolk College to provide more facilities.

Abbeycroft Leisure, which manages the centre in conjunction with St Edmundsbury Borough Council, is investing £114,000 into its Bury and Haverhill facilities.

A total of £41,000 will be invested into Bury’s facilities to meet increased demand for its exercise classes, with changes expected to start in September.

Abbeycroft Leisure’s chief executive Warren Smyth said: “We are seeing a boom in exercise classes in Bury and in our gym and power room in Haverhill and we need to meet that demand.”

The planned studio expansions in the Bury centre will allow exercise class sizes to expand by up to 15 places, and the centre’s creche will move to one of the squash courts with a new creative learning centre.

These new developments will coincide with a 20-week programme of planned works which includes replacing the swimming pool’s flumes, also due to start next month.

The partnership with West Suffolk College will see Abbeycroft acquire an 18-station fitness studio, with equipment provided by the college, which will be available for sports students to use.
