Organisers have hailed the first Bury St Edmunds parkrun a huge success.

The 5km run, which took place in Nowton Park on Saturday, exceeded organisers’ expectations.

Steve pretty, event director, said: “We had 160 runners which was very much at the high end of expectations so it was very successful.”

He said Bury’s parkrun, a free event being held every Saturday at 9am, attracted a lot of ‘parkrun tourists’ and depended entirely on supporter volunteers, with 16 people helping out last weekend.

Amanda Martin, from the St Edmund Pacers, was the first female to complete the run, in 23 minutes and five seconds.

Will Law, from the Ipswich JAFFA running club, was the first man to finish, with a time of 17:58.
