Mayoral robes do not make the best running gear, but in spite of this handicap St Edmundsbury’s Mayor managed to grab £200 worth of good in a charity trolley dash.

Mayor Robert Everitt was invited to do the dash at Bury St Edmunds Tesco superstore by its community champion Lynda Osborn who enlisted him while they were at her brother’s wedding.

Lynda explained that Tesco stores this week have been supporting the FairShare and Trussell Trust food banks.

The mayor’s trolley full will go to FairShare. He said: “It’s all for the right reasons. There are a lot of deserving people out there who fall on hard times and need our help.”

Lynda added: “We’re collecting from 9am to 9pm every day until Saturday. We’re giving customers a list of things they can donate – we can only take non-perishables.”
