Bury St Edmunds’ Green county councillor Mark Ereira is hoping to become his party’s national deputy leader.

Cllr Ereira this week officially announced he will be standing for election to the post at the party conference in September.

He said that now his son had graduated and his daughter was going to university, he had the time to do more.

“The Euro election was a wake-up call for me,” he said. “With the Green Party we have to create an optimistic mass green movement of people prepared to take action to put pressure on governments.

“If people are going to claim, as our environment secretary does, that climate change isn’t man made, we’re going to face an ecological catastrophe of our own making.”

But he stressed: “Clearly we [The Greens] have also got to be talking about all the issues that are important in people’s everyday lives.”
