The story of the six hospitals of Bury St Edmunds has been captured in a book which will raise money for St Nicholas Hospice Care.

Brian Milner of Bury St Edmunds is a retired advisory teacher for hearing impaired children.

His book Six Hospitals and a Chapel give an insight into the role of the ancient ecclestiastical buildings. Situated on the edge of the town they provided respite and shelter to many pilgrims who travelled to the Abbey in Bury. They also provided a caring place for many of those visitors who were ill and came seeking a cure from the relics at the Abbey.

St Nicholas, St John’s, St Peter’s, St Petronella, St Saviour, St Stephen’s and St Thomas’s Chapel are all featured.

Brian is a member of the Bury Heritage Guides and a past chairman of the Blackbourne University of the Third Age. He will be signing copies of his book at Waterstones, Butter Market on November 27 and Tesco on November 28. A collection will be held at the store which is close to the site of St Saviour.

The book costs £10.99 and is available from bookshops.
