Birthday joy for ASDA

Campaigners who spent years fighting for an ASDA store have celebrated the shop's first birthday.

The supermarket, in Western Way, Bury St Edmunds, was a year old on Wednesday - and on Saturday, members of the Howard Estate Over 60s Club and the Westley Estate Residents' Association were invited to a birthday party at the store.

A four-year campaign from residents, who said a supermarket was needed on the west side of town, was vital in helping the company gain planning permission for the site.

Group members signed a card and cut a birthday cake, while the shop's manager, Barry Gramlick, presented a 643.83 cheque to St Nicholas Hospice Care, following a fund-raising event that saw employee Chris Holmes sit in a tub of baked beans.

Ernie Broom, of the Over 60s Club, said: "I can't believe it's been a year - it's gone so quickly.

"People are very impressed with the store. The fight was definitely worth it."
