A STUDENT who boosted her university’s Oxfam group from two members to a student society has won an national award.
Katherine ‘Kat’ Lawson, 21, from Ixworth, will be graduating with a degree in media and communication from De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester this summer and has been awarded Volunteering England’s Gold Award for Leadership.
The award is the only national student volunteering award that goes to those who have excelled in leadership through volunteering.
Kat is the chair of the DMU Oxfam group and has overseen its transition from a project with two members to an established society within the students’ union. She has run many awareness raising events for the society as well as raising cash for the charity.
She said: “It never really occurred to me that I was taking on a leadership position as such, so I was really shocked when I won the award.”
