Apprentices and the master as Greene King in Bury St Edmunds celebrates an awards double

Greene King in Bury St Edmunds is celebrating two awards – one for its quality of training and other for its expertise – in wine.

The brewery and pubs firm won regional macro employer of the year, in the NationalApprenticeship Awards Central Eastern ceremony.

It has more than 3,000 employees in training or who have completed apprenticeships – and it now goes to a national finals in November.

John Smith, group HR director for Greene King said: “As one of Suffolk’s largest employers, Greene King prides itself on recognising the importance of developing employees’ talent and potential.”.

At the same time Greene King’s head wine buyer James Davis, has joined an elite group of just 312 Masters of Wine around the World.

He studied for five years – during which time Greene King has seen wine sales rise by 62 per cent – it aims to become the best wine retailer in the UK pub industry.

“The journey to achieve the status of Master of Wine was the most challenging, but ultimately satisfying, of my life,” said James.

“As an MW student you begin to think about the Wolrd of wine, business and study very differently, and are fortunate to meet great people from around the World.”

Chief executive Rooney Anand said: “This is one of the toughest professional qualifications to gain, which makes this achievement even more impreessive.

“It is a rare opportunity for a pub company to have a Master of Wine and we are excited by the commercial opportunities and competitive edge that this appointment will offer us un the future.”
