COL GADAFFI’S anti-aircraft crews have learned how hard Wattisham’s Apaches can hit back.

The Ministry of Defence said that the 656 Squadron Apache attack helicopters operating from HMS Ocean on Sunday penetrated deep into Libyan airspace to strike a troop concentration at Al Watiyah, 40 miles south of the coast at Zuwarah.

It added: “Hellfire missiles and cannon fire accounted for one headquarters and twelve military vehicles, including at least one armed with a surface-to-air weapon system, with another four vehicles left seriously damaged.”

The Apache’s sensors lock on to anti-aircraft systems’ radar, alerting the two-person crew and targeting the threat. The Apache’s defensive equipment automatically fires decoy flares or foil strips to jam radar if incoming missiles are detected.
