A TEAM of young people has given a charity’s base a facelift as part of a new community action scheme.

The teenagers painted the outside of the Gatehouse Project, in Dettingen Way, Bury St Edmunds, and installed some plants and flowers, which they bought through fund-raising activities. Their work was part of the National Citizen Service – a Government programme designed to bring youths from different backgrounds together to volunteer in their community.

They also spoke to elderly people at the Gatehouse day centre and last Friday packed bags for customers at Tesco while 15-year-old Elly Wilson sang and played piano in the supermarket’s foyer. Sarah Goodenough, NCS cohort leader for Bury, said: “They’ve really embraced the experience.”
