AN INCREDIBLE 3,000 mile charity bike ride across the United States is to be undertaken by a Bury St Edmunds man in memory of his ‘beautiful’ and ‘wonderful’ friend.
Mark Cronin is raising money for Ipswich Hospital based charity Woolverstone Wish, in memory of friend Janice Haward who died in July aged 53.
“I first met Jan when I was 17 and in 33 years never heard her complain or say a bad word about anyone.
“She always had a smile on her face” he said.
Starting in Los Angeles, California, Mark will cycle an average of 100 miles a day in temperatures of up to 40 degrees to reach their final destination of Chesapeake Bay, Virginia.
The journey across the US from coast to coast will span ten states and over 3,000 miles.
Mark flew out to the US earlier this week with two friends in preparation of the challenge.
He plans to complete the mammoth cycle by October 15, leaving him just over a month to complete the challenge.
On the way Mark and his two cycling colleague will have to endure tough terrain including mountains, desert and, great plains.
They are also likely to face a mix of extreme heat in the desert and as well as having to cycle in the wind and rain.
The journey will see Mark cycle through the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky before reaching the last stop of Virginia.
The Woolverstone Wish charity is hoping to raise £800,000 to refurbish the chemotherapy unit at Ipswich Hospital.
Its aim to increase the available space in the unit, improve the privacy of patients, and to provide a more comfortable treatment area for them.
Mark said: “Jan received fantastic care from all the staff at the Woolverstone Wing of the Ipswich Hospital.
“ I know she would have loved to raise some money to help them in their refurbishment programme to help their present and future patients.”
