There's some sweet news for job hunters this week – 30 new jobs are being created at the Silver Spoon plant, in Bury St Edmunds.
The workforce is being expanded to 120, thanks to a project to construct a new state-of-the-art packaging complex.

Construction work on the scheme, which has cost several million pounds, started in January and it is due to be up and running by the end of August.

Tom Stevens, head of beet sugar operations, said: "This project has taken about seven years, from first being talked about to now.

"This is a really exciting time – we pride ourselves on being one of the most modern packing plants in the world."

Three new lines will be installed in what was once a storage unit. The racking has been removed and the area cleared in preparation for the lines, an engineering workshop built and two new silos put in place.

Project manager Chris Towers said that by the end of the year, all Silver Spoon products would be packaged on the site.

"It is an exciting project and it is good to be involved in something that's a new build," he said. "We've had around 45-50 people working on the construction and we've used local firms where possible."

The Bury Silver Spoon complex was built in 1982 for the packaging of granulated sugar. Caster sugar was added to the range in 1988.

Currently, the plant packs about 2,300 tonnes – 2.3 million 1kg packs – every week.

Operations are being moved to the Bury site after a facility in Newark was earmarked for closure.

For an application form for the available positions, which include packing operatives, maintenance engineers, forklift truck drivers, shift managers and a quality assistant, call 01284 731276 and leave a name, address and contact telephone number.
