A man from Bury St Edmunds, who needs major surgery on his face following an unprovoked attack, has spoken of his shock.
Paul Beynon, 32, was walking along Guildhall Street, in Bury, with his girlfriend, Angela Knowles, at 2am on Sunday morning when they were set upon by a man and a woman.

Having punched Ms Knowles, 39, the attackers turned on Paul, punching him in the face and kicking him in the teeth, leaving him with a broken jaw.

Speaking from his bed in Ipswich Hospital, Mr Beynon said: "It was totally unprovoked.

"I'm a Bury lad and a know a lot of decent people here so you just don't expect that."

Mr Beynon was left with a foot impression on his face and doctors estimated he had been punched around six to seven times.

He was taken to West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury, following the attack and later transferred to Ipswich Hospital, where he will have two metal plates put in his face and 40 metal stitches to repair the damage.

Mr Beynon said: "It is absolutely disgusting to think people can do that.

"I can always remember Bury being a safe place, but it is clearly not if things like this can happen."

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said officers were pursuing a line of inquiry after a man suffered serious facial injuries during an incident on Sunday morning.

Anyone with information about the incident can call Det Con Andy Smethurst at Bury Police Station on 01284 774100.
