The Angel is a former British Sugar Fire engine which has been donated to the International Fire and Rescue Association (ifra), based in Fife, Scotland. The organisation helps overseas firefighters train and provides them with equipment.

The British Sugar engine is being sent to Paraguay and will be based the capital, Asuncion.

The Bury St Edmunds factory has a new fire tender and wanted to find a use for its old one – a 1982 model bought by British Sugar in 1996.

Because it is customary to name a donated appliance, the staff at British Sugar decided to call it The Angel of St Edmunds.

Davey Hume, from IFRA, who is blue watch manager at Edinburgh Airport, came to Bury to collect the tender last week.

British Sugar has a firefighting team of 25 on site who would initially cope with any fire that occurs while awaiting the emergency services.

Firefighter and team shift leader Nigel Wolstenholme said: "I knew Davey Hume and what IFRA does seemed so logical, it made sense to offer the tender."

IFRA was set up in 2001 and works to obtain equipment and train firefighters from poorer countries in how to use firefighting equipment and keep themselves safe.
