Ambitious plans for a new weight loss unit at The Academy Health and Fitness Centre, in Barrow, have been given the green light.
Glen Moulds, chief instructor at the Kenshinkai Shotokan Karate Club, at Church Farm, was granted planning permission last week to transform a grain store into accommodation for clients hoping to lose weight as part of a new programme.

Mr Moulds, who is a 5th Dan (Japan), said: "This is an exciting development.

"This will put Suffolk on the map in the fight against obesity."

Mr Moulds hopes to build four double bedrooms, all with ensuite facilities, to house clients embarking on his Eat4U programme, which aims to educate and train people struggling with their weight.

If funding can be found, Mr Moulds plans to introduce the candidates to an intensive week of walking, running, yoga, paintballing and archery at his gym in Church Road, followed by six weeks' support online.

The programme will be accompanied by teaching sessions by chefs in healthy eating, cooking and shopping skills.

Mr Moulds, 51, said: "Obesity is a major problem in Suffolk. There is an epidemic nationwide.

"I hope this will become a centre point across the world to see if the system works."

Mr Moulds is now looking for donors, sponsors or funding to get the ambitious project off the ground.
