Both centres have seen a steady increase in the number of Portuguese and Polish- speaking people seeking help over the last two years.

But a recent surge has meant managers fear confused and scared immigrants could be walking away without understanding the advice they have been given.

This is because there are no advisers who can speak those languages at the centres.

Iain Duncan, deputy manager of the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), said: "The worst part is if we do not know if they have understood what we have said they can do about a problem," he said.

He said there had been a five to 10 per cent increase of Portuguese and Polish speakers visiting the centre since last year.

He appealed for anyone who could speak English and either Portuguese or Polish and might be able to spare a few hours a week to help with advice to call the CAB.

He said thorough training and travel expenses would be given.
