Poor road visibility caused by low sunlight may have contributed to the death of a Barton Mills man, who died when his bike was involved in a collision with a car near his home, an inquest heard.
Graham Peachey, 45, of Mildenhall Road, was cycling along Herringswell Road towards Tuddenham when he was in collision with a Volvo Estate vehicle at around 8.10am on November 12, 2007.

Mr Peachey was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. He died from a broken neck and multiple other injuries.

During the inquest on Wednesday, coroner Dr Peter Dean read a statement from the Volvo driver – Brian Camps – who said he had failed to see Mr Peachey cycling along the road.

He said he had been travelling between 50 and 60mph – the road's speed limit is 60mph – when the collision occured. He stopped straight after and called an ambulance. He also began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Mr Peachey until further help arrived.

Although there were no witnesses to the incident, one driver, who pulled over when he saw Mr Camps on his mobile phone, said in a statement that the low, bright sunlight was causing visibility problems for drivers heading towards Tuddenham. He stayed with Mr Camps to divert traffic around the accident.

Dr Dean also read out a statement from Pc John Rogers who said there had been no defects with the road or the Volvo.

He believed that the low sun was causing problems for drivers, although other vehicles had safely passed Mr Peachey that day already. It was acknowledged, however, that Mr Peachey had been wearing dark clothing.

Dr Dean said that difficulties with visibility may have affected Mr Camps' ability in seeing Mr Peachey on his bike.

He said: "What took place was a tragic accident. Our thoughts go out to his family at this particular time." He recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Suffolk Police confirmed no action was being taken against Mr Camps in relation to the incident.
