Airmen are cleared over YouTube video

An American airman, who was filmed snorting what appeared to be cocaine, has been cleared of any wrongdoing – according to RAF Mildenhall officials.
Last month, commanders at the base launched an investigation into a video which was posted on the website YouTube, allegedly showing a man snorting a line of white powder.
The five-minute video, which contained a montage of clips, also appeared to show airmen involved in drinking games, playing with the fire of a barbecue and swinging a large Samurai-like sword around a small room.
A spokeswoman for the base said: "All persons shown in the video are innocent of any wrongdoing and have not been charged with any sort of crime.
"Statements were taken from all those involved in the video. It has been thoroughly investigated."
She said the white powder being snorted in the footage was not linked to drugs – it was believed to be powder used to make an energy drink.
The investigation also revealed the video was filmed two years ago and that the footage was posted on the internet by a local landlord and not the personnel involved.
The person who posted the video, a landlord from the Mildenhall area, claimed to have been given the footage by an airman who has since been deployed to another air base.
The video has now been taken off the website, which the landlord, who wishes to remain anonymous, claimed was due to the US Air Force exerting pressure on YouTube to remove the footage.
A spokeswoman for Google, which owns YouTube, said the company did not comment on individual videos and could not explain why it had been removed from the site.
However, she added that viewers can 'flag-up' videos which they believe break the website's terms and conditions. These are then analysed by the website's review team before a decision is made to delete any footage.
She was unable to comment on whether this occurred for the footage relating to RAF Mildenhall.
The landlord said he now planned to create his own website to display the video and claims to have more 'interesting' films of airmen.
In the last three years, there have been two convictions for illegal drug use at RAF Mildenhall. The base runs a urine analysis programme, in which two-thirds of its population are randomly selected to undergo each year.
The annual number of positive results usually amounts to less then one per cent.
Last year, several airmen from neighbouring RAF Lakenheath were thrown out of the military following an undercover investigation into illegal drug use.
