WHEN Walsham-le-Willows held its first open gardens event there was only one other village in Suffolk that did it.

Many villages now run them but the 31st Walsham Open Gardens weekend still drew 1,500 visitors and took £16,300, much of it Gift Aided to raise even more for the village church and organisations

More than 200 people are involved in the annual event, held on August bank holiday Sunday and Monday. This year the 30 open gardens included five new ones and four more returning to the event.

In addition, there was an art show and guest musicians in the church and band concerts in the Memorial Hall carpark.

A village market sold everything from geraniums to jewellery.

As well as refreshments in the hall, Collen Baker not only opened her garden but laid on a barbecue featuring meat from the village butchers Rolfe’s of Walsham.
